A long overdue celebration for Margrit + Aanan

It wouldn’t be an accurate reflection of this couple and their day if we didn’t first take it back a few years, all the way to January 2020 (was that really just four years ago?), when Margrit and Aanan first inquired and onboarded with us. What we thought would be a year or so of wedding planning turned into three, as the pandemic hit and flipped the wedding industry (and the world, for that matter) upside down, pushing their celebration first to 2021, and then further to August 2023. It’s safe to say Margrit and Aanan knew what they wanted, and wouldn’t let a simple world-changing event get in the way of their vision, whether it came to life a year or three later.

Now let’s rewind again to when Margrit and Aanan initially inquired with us in 2020: by this point, their relationship was long-established; sturdy on its own two feet and unshakable. Their families had lovingly hassled them (and stopped hassling them. . . mostly) about getting married. If you met this couple, you’d understand why their families were eager to celebrate on their behalf. They are driven, considerate, fun, and a darn good team. In their own time and their own way, amidst busy lives and careers, Margrit and Aanan made the decision to tie the knot and have a wedding on their own terms.

When we first met for their in person consultation, we spent hours connecting about their vision, their creative desires, and Tapestry’s philosophy. Margrit had found a blog of mine, “The Engaged Couple’s Roadmap,” and really resonated with how I coached couples to set their values together before diving into the wedding planning process—something I believe is a crucial part of creating a day that is wholly yours, rather than simply a conglomeration of all the weddings you’ve seen on Pinterest. Of the two, Margrit is the creative and emotionally-driven partner, while Aanan is the process-oriented, emotionally-intuitive partner; Margrit creatively unlocks while Aanan creates understanding and connection. It was easy to see the love and commitment between the two of them with the way they communicated, listened, and understood each other.

We walked away after cocktails and fries with a deep bond and agreement to work together; little did we know that bond was so strong that not even a pandemic, nor two date postponements, could shake it. Forging these lifelong relationships with our couples is something we will never take for granted, and is what allows us to truly dive deep into your dreams, your desires, your soul-aligned visions.

Once the pandemic slowly started shutting the world down, Margrit and Aanan took a mature, unrushed approach to their event. It became clear that their first postponement to 2021 still wouldn’t allow their diverse and international guest list to attend, so they postponed to 2023 with the same team of vendors on board. We stayed in touch throughout 2020-2021, proportionally stewarding their vision while also giving them the time to focus on each other, their careers, and travels. In 2022, we picked the planning helm back up and turned the volume up on their event, more ready than ever to dive back in and start dreaming anew.

It comes as no surprise that we had countless couples who went on a similar journey through & after the pandemic; we navigated each celebration individually according to the couple, and continuously reflected on the evolution of their vision. One of our couples, Kellen and Max, decided to elope in 2020 in light of the pandemic, but later experienced some post-elopement blues after missing their loved ones. The vision: high-end, non-traditional, and authentic

The first part of event design here at Tapestry is always hearing your vision for the vibe of your day: the mood, the colors, the atmosphere, the feeling, the people. . . all of this contributes to the initial vision we collaborate on as we begin the design process. When we asked Margrit and Aanan to describe their wedding vision, they said that they were picturing a non-traditional, but meaningful and intimate celebration of their union. They emphasized their desire to defy tradition, and to provide their family and guests with an unforgettable, genuine experience. With diverse Indian and Latin backgrounds, it was also important to Margrit and Aanan that their day not only infuse elements of and reflect their own unique cultures, but also blend them together for a deeply authentic reflection of their partnership. Right away, it was clear that Tapestry’s creative philosophy aligned effortlessly with Margrit and Aanan’s vision.

A luxe rooftop ceremony overlooking Seattle

Come late summer of 2023, after years of planning, designing, curating, dreaming, and endless collaboration, Margrit and Aanan’s event had finally arrived. We planned a luxe rooftop ceremony overlooking the city, with breathtaking views of South Lake Union and the brightest blue skies we could’ve asked for. The Fremont Foundry is one of our favorite Seattle wedding venues for a reason; the way you can transition from a light and vibrant ceremony up on the roof, into the main atrium for a glamorous evening soirée, is unmatched; with space for up to 175 guests, this industrial venue is a dream come true for Seattle couples like Margrit and Aanan.

We wanted each “traditional” part of the day to have its own element of surprise, keeping the guests on their toes and looking forward to every moment of the evening. So instead of asking guests to be seated at the ceremony immediately upon arrival, we opened the afternoon with rooftop cocktails and plush lounge furniture before inviting guests to join the culturally blended ceremony. We coordinated a live interpretation of the ceremony for their Spanish-speaking guests to ensure every person felt invited, valued, welcomed, and personally cared for. It’s the little extra pieces of effort and intention like this that bring together a full picture of your life together, your love story, and your most loved people; that make them feel included and welcomed in as the important parts of your lives they are.

A futuristic, speakeasy-inspired reception

The focus for Margrit and Aanan’s evening reception was entertainment, so we developed a bit of a speakeasy-inspired, “past into future” experience for their guests. It was important to them that they keep their guests interested, interacting, and entertained for the whole of their celebration; no tired wedding scripts, no predictable event flows, no awkward moments in between the main events of the evening. We followed up the ceremony with a second cocktail hour and appetizers for the guests, ensuring Margrit and Aanan had abundant quality time to gather with their loved ones before transitioning to dinner.

Guests were taken to dinner by futuristic performers ushering them down the stairwell and into the dining hall, accompanied by a live pianist and a wash of dramatic lighting that set the tone for the event space. We enjoyed a generous family-style meal to the beautiful sounds of live piano, with dishes inspired by the nationalities and cultures of both Margrit, Aanan, and their guests.

After toasts and a series of heartfelt speeches, live performers in futuristic speakeasy costumes escorted guests from dinner to the dance floor, where the couple was spotlighted for their first dance. The surprise aerialist performance that followed was without a doubt one of the most unique, eclectic events we’ve incorporated into a wedding reception, and what fun it was to see guests’ reactions! Dynamic lighting and a killer DJ set had everyone shifting to the dance floor for the rest of the night, with more surprise performances and awe-inspiring acrobatics in tow.

We absolutely could not have pulled this event off without careful planning and coordination from our venue, music talent, performance talent, and lighting crew. It was spectacular getting to see how every element of the event design, from rentals to florals to the photobooth, was hand-curated to support this timeless speakeasy vibe—and how impeccably it turned out.

Our planning team supported a robust weekend-long support package and bridal concierge service to help keep things relaxed, on time, and well supported. Everyone on the team pulled together and prioritized this event three-years-in-the-making, and we are so grateful to have turned out an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience for these wonderful people. There is truly nothing more gratifying than pulling off a high-stakes event for hardworking, compassionate, creative couples, and we could not have been more honored to be the ones to do it for Margrit and Aanan.

For such an intricate, detailed event like this, we functionally had to create an entertainment run of show for the day, with multiple vendor cues being coordinated at the same time throughout the event.
